A 36-year old Utica man has been sent to Oneida County Jail without bail after New Hartford Police charged him with possessing and passing counterfeit money. On July 15th, New Hartford Police were called to Piggy Pat’s Bar-B-Que in Washington Mills after a restaurant employee received a suspicious $50 bill. Police confirmed that the $50 bill was counterfeit. Police were able to locate the man who passed the bill still at the restaurant. Police took Jeremiah T. Hurd was arrested charged with two felony counts of Criminal Possession of a Forged Instrument in the First degree. He was arraigned in New Hartford Court before Town Justice James VanSlyke who committed Hurd to jail. The continuing police investigation resulted in a search warrant being issued for Hurd’s car. Located in his car was as additional 16 pieces of counterfeit money. It is not known how long the counterfeit money has been passed in this area. New Hartford Police are seeking the assistance of area merchants and banks to locate additional pieces of counterfeit money. So far, the serial numbers of the counterfeit money linked to Hurd are as follows:
