Two Vernon Residents Face Fraudulent Credit Card Charges

The New Hartford Police Department arrested two Vernon area residents after a month long investigation revealed that the two had used a charge card without the permission of the owner at Sears in New Hartford.

According to Officer J.D. Gehringer, police were called to Sears in Sangertown Mall on December 10th 2008 after store personnel became suspicious of a couple making charges in the store with a Sears charge card. It was discovered during the investigation that the two had made purchases on a relative’s Sears card without permission of the card owner.  Police recovered the card at the time of the initial call.  The following day, the owner of the card contacted police and wished to file criminal charges for the unauthorized use of the card.  Charged was Matthew W. West, age 23, of Vernon, and Heather A Collins, age 21, formerly of Vernon.  West was arrested back in December a short time after the complaint.  Collins, who had fled the area, was located on Tuesday afternoon in Syracuse by members of the New Hartford Police Warrants Division, and Syracuse Police Warrants Division.  West faces charges of Criminal Possession of Stolen Property 4th, a class E Felony, and Petit Larceny, a class A Misdemeanor.  Collins also faces charges of Criminal Possession of Stolen Property 4th and Petit Larceny, along with an additional charge of Forgery 2nd, a class D Felony.  Both West and Collins were arraigned in New Hartford town court and their cases are pending in court.
