Forestport Man Arrested for Several Crimes after Incident at Sangertown Square
The New Hartford Police Department investigated a complaint this morning that resulted in the arrest of a Forestport man for several criminal charges.
According to the New Hartford Police Department, at approximately 7:00 AM a call was received from the General Manager of Sangertown Square who reported that a male had entered the mall and was found standing outside the mall offices. A short conversation ensued between the two parties and while still in the mall the unidentified male made a statement to the General Manager, which included causing damage to the mall building. The male left the mall after making the statement but was later identified through mall surveillance video. The male was identified as Steven J Sousa, age 37 of Forestport. Sousa left the area in a vehicle and that vehicle’s description was broadcast to numerous police agencies.
After Sousa was identified it was learned that this was not the first incident involving him at Sangertown. According to the Sangertown Security Director, several months ago Sousa was involved in an altercation with a female who worked at the mall. No further details were available regarding the previous incident. A file check on Sousa revealed that there was a current Order of Protection on file stating that Sousa was to stay away from the workplace of a former girlfriend, which was in the Sangertown Square Mall. Sousa was located and taken into custody on Route 12 in the Town of Trenton. The arrest was made by members of the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office Warrants Division and Sousa was turned over to the New Hartford Police. Sousa was arraigned in the Town of New Hartford Court on the following charges: one count of Stalking in the First Degree, a Class B Misdemeanor, one count of Falsely Reporting an Incident in the Second Degree, a Class E Felony, one count of Criminal Contempt in the Second Degree, a Class A Misdemeanor and one count of Harassment in the Second Degree, a Violation. Sousa was remanded to the Oneida County Correctional Facility in lieu of $2,500 cash bail and will return to the Town of New Hartford Court at a later date.
