Rome Woman Arrested for DWI after Car/Pedestrian Accident

On February 06, 2009 at approximately 01:30a.m., the New Hartford Police Department responded to a car/pedestrian motor vehicle accident on State Route 5 by Alexandria Road. Upon arrival it was determined that a vehicle operated by Amelia A. Harlander, age27, from Rome, struck Robert D. Winfield, age 41, from Waterville, as he was attempting to cross Route 5.

Winfield was treated at the scene by members of the New Hartford Fire Department for multiple injuries including head and significant leg injuries. Edwards Ambulance transported Winfield to St. Elizabeth’s hospital for treatment of his injuries, which are not life threatening at this time.

New Hartford Police Department accident reconstruction members were called to the scene. Based on the investigation it was determined that Winfield was not crossing the highway in a crosswalk. He was also dressed in dark clothing, making it difficult for motorists to observe him. Harlander, who was not injured in the accident, was arrested for driving while intoxicated and did submit to a blood chemical test to determine her intoxication level. Harlander was released with vehicle and traffic tickets for a later court appearance.

The Investigation into this accident is on going and anyone who may have witnessed the accident, or observed Winfield walking before the accident, is asked to contact the New Hartford Police at 733-6666.

Contact: Sgt. Robert Philo with any inquiries.
