Burglary Alarm Activation Leads to Discovery of Kitchen Fire

On today’s date at 12:51 AM, New Hartford Police were dispatched to investigate a burglar alarm activation at the International House of Pancakes (IHOP) located at 535 French Road in the Town of New Hartford. When the responding units arrived they found an unsecured door. The two Officers then entered the building to search for subjects inside; once they were in the building they saw smoke and flames coming from  the kitchen. The Officers requested the Fire Department to respond and then conducted a quick search of the building for any possible suspects or victims.

A short time later the New York Mills Fire Department arrived on the scene and began fire-fighting operations. The fire was declared under control at 1:38 AM. Through a follow-up investigation it was determined that no burglary had taken place, that in fact a door was accidentally left unsecured by departing employees. The fire resulted from grease being ignited by a pilot light on a grill. The restaurant is currently closed while clean up is taking place, and the fire suppression system is being recharged and recertified.

The Town of New Hartford Codes Department and the Oneida County Department of Health are also currently inspecting the building, which cannot reopen until permission is granted by both the Codes and Health Departments. It is anticipated that the necessary requirements to reopen could be met as early as tomorrow (Wednesday), at which time permission to reopen could be granted.
