Richfield Springs Man Arrested for DWI Following Crash

A Richfield Springs man was arrested by the New Hartford Police Department late Wednesday evening after he left the scene of a motor vehicle accident on Route 8 in the Town of New Hartford.  The accident occurred in the southbound lane of Route 8 near the Chadwicks exit.

Officer J.D. Gehringer was patrolling on Oneida Street in Chadwicks around 11:40 pm when he observed a pickup truck with heavy passenger side damage in the parking lot of the Xtra Mart on Oneida Street.  Two men were seen looking at the damage vehicle.  When approached by the officer, the owner of the vehicle, Travis M. Dyn, age 30, of State Route 28 in Richfield Springs told Gehringer that he swerved to avoid a deer in the road and lost control of the truck and struck a guardrail.  Dyn stated that he drove to Xtra Mart to survey the damage on the truck.  During the interview it appeared that Dyn was under the influence of alcohol.  After failing several field sobriety tests Dyn was taken into custody and charged with DWI and Leaving the Scene of a Property Damage Accident.  Dyn was released on tickets and will answer the charges in New Hartford town court in March.
