MADISON COUNTY WOMAN ARRESTED ON FAKE CHECK CHARGE

The New Hartford Police Department arrested a 23 year old Madison County woman after a five month investigation into the passing of a bogus check at a local bank.

Investigator Steve Laymon charged Courtney N. Williams, of Lebanon Road, Earlville, with one count of Grand Larceny in the 4th degree, a felony, and one count of Criminal Possession of a Forged Instrument in the 2nd degree, also a felony.  The investigation revealed that Williams passed a fraudulent check at the NBT Bank on Seneca Turnpike.  The check was for $2,200.54 and was deposited into Williams account on 9/23/08.  Williams then made two separate withdrawals totaling $2,202.57 from the account the following day.  The bank then discovered in October 2008 that the check was fraudulent and contacted police.  At this point it appears as though the NBT Bank was the only victim in New Hartford.

Williams was arraigned in New Hartford Town Court before Judge James VanSlyke and released on her own recognizance.  She is to reappear in court on 3/10/09.  During the investigation a second suspect was developed.  The arrest of that person is pending.
