UNAUTHORIZIED SOLICITATION REPORTED

RESIDENTS WARNED OF SCAM

New Hartford Police have received a report of unauthorized door-to-door solicitation in the Genesee Street and Hoffman Road area seeking donations on behalf of Upstate Cerebral Palsy (UCP). The report describes a short, slender, Caucasian female with light hair and multiple ear piercing asking residents for a monetary donation. A coffee can was presented to the residents in which to receive the donation.

UCP management has informed police that the agency does not participate in door-to-door fund raising activities.

Any resident who has someone come to their home requesting funds for UCP should immediately notify police with a complete description of the person involved and their direction of travel. If a car is related to their activities, a complete description of the vehicle also needs to be reported to the police.

Local law requires solicitors to register with the Town Clerk, to obtain a permit, to display the permit while engaged in authorized solicitation and to restrict their activities to between the hours of 9:30 am and 9:00 pm. during winter months. Authorized soliciting is permitted and between 9:30 am and 9:00 pm during summer months.

Unfortunately, New Hartford police have experienced past incidents where names of reputable agencies and organizations have been used for unauthorized solicitation. These incidents were found to be conducted by individuals whose motivation was to raise money to finance personal addictions. This activity is unlawful and persons participating in such activity are subjecting themselves to arrest.

Questions regarding this press release can be directed to Sgt. Robert Philo at 724-7111.
