COUNTERFEIT MONEY PASSED AT MALL
New Hartford Police are investigating the recent passing of counterfeit $100 bills at the Sangertown Square Mall. So far, five $100 bills have been recovered.
The $100 bills are good reproductions of legitimate money.
A common practice among cashiers to determine if money is counterfeit is to mark money with a special pen. If the pen reacts with a dark mark on the bill then it is considered counterfeit. The counterfeit money passed at the mall did not leave a dark mark. Cashiers are being urged to check money for built-in security features that include a security stripe and a watermark that matches the picture on the face of the bill. Cashiers should also be looking for cloudy printing and inconsistent borders on the edges of the bills.
The $100 bills received at the mall have a portrait of Benjamin Franklin on the face of each bill but the watermark portrait is that of Abraham Lincoln, suggesting that the $100 bills were created by altering $5 bills. Of the five $100 bills recovered, four of them have duplicate serial numbers. The serial numbers on the recovered bills are:
Area merchants that have received $100 bills during the past few days that are suspected to be counterfeit are being asked to contact Sgt. Robert Philo by calling 315/733-6666.
