Car Crash Sends Three to the Hospital

On April 21, 2009 at about 7:34 am, the New Hartford Police Department responded to a report of a rollover car crash involving a utility pole on Seneca Turnpike near Concord Boulevard.  Upon arrival, first responding New Hartford Police Officers and New Hartford Volunteer Firefighters encountered a vehicle, occupied by an adult female and two children, on its roof with a utility pole and live electrical wires down on top of it.  While assessing the scene, a small fire broke out in the engine compartment of the vehicle while it was still occupied.  As a result of this exigent circumstance, the fire was extinguished by the police department while the passengers were freed by a firefighter, prior to the arrival of National Grid.  The New Hartford Police Department, however, wishes to remind the public about the danger of downed power lines and not to approach them for any reason.

The vehicle, a 2009 Honda being operated by Dina C. Maggio of New Hartford, was traveling West on Seneca Turnpike when Maggio became distracted, causing her to take her eyes off the road.  As a result, the vehicle left the North shoulder of roadway and entered a ditch.  The vehicle then struck a driveway culvert and became airborne, striking the utility pole while in the air.  The vehicle then overturned and the pole and wires came down on top of it.  As a result, the vehicle was demolished and the roadway was closed for over and hour.

Maggio and her children, ages 6 and 8, were treated at the scene by members of the New Hartford Fire Department, Edwards Ambulance and Central Oneida County Volunteer Ambulance and transported to St. Elizabeth Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries.  Seatbelt use is credited for the minor injuries as they would have been much more severe had the occupants not been wearing them. No tickets have been issued.
