New Hartford Man Arrested On Numerous Charges Following Theft of NYS Benefits Card
A 48-year-old New Hartford resident has been jailed after being charged with felony charges of Burglary, Forgery, and Grand Larceny and misdemeanor charges of Petit Larceny, Identity Theft and Unlawful Possession of Personal Identification Information.
According to Officer Jason Freiberger, on Monday, April19th, the New Hartford Police Department received a report of suspicious activity on a NYS Department of Labor unemployment debit card. The transaction occurred three days after the death of the cardholder. The investigation identified the suspect as Fred A. Carpenter, an acquaintance of the deceased cardholder. After learning of the death of the cardholder, Carpenter unlawfully entered the apartment of the deceased located on Seneca Turnpike and took possession of the debit card. Carpenter then called the Unemployment hotline, and posed as the deceased and renewed the benefits of the debit card. Carpenter then went to an ATM machine at the Sangertown Square Mall and withdrew the maximum allowance on the decedents debit card.
On April 22, 2010, Carpenter was arrested and the debit card, the debit account PIN number, and documentation containing the decedents date of birth and social security number were recovered in the possession of Carpenter.
Carpenter was arraigned at the Town of New Hartford Town Court before Judge James VanSlyke who committed Carpenter to the Oneida County Jail in lieu of $1,500 bond. Carpenter is due back in New Hartford Court on April 28th 2010 at 10:00 AM.
New Hartford Police will work with the court to seek full restitution to the state Department of Labor for the money Carpenter stole from the unemployment benefit account. Any Questions Regarding this release contact Ptlm. Freiberger at 315-724-7111.
