Altercation in Police Parking Lot Leads to Felony Arrest
On June 10th, 2007 at approximately 9:38pm several New Hartford Police Department members were dispatched to the parking lot of their own police station for a fight involving mace and a baseball bat.
Several little league coaches who were just getting out of a meeting at the Community Building on Kellogg Road witnessed two men speed into the parking lot from Tibbitts Road, exit their respective vehicles, and become involved in a heated verbal altercation.
Sgt. Michael Inserra, Patrolman James Hyatt, and Patrolman Ronald Fontaine arrived at the police station and encountered the two males circling each other in the parking lot. One male was in possession of a can of mace and the other was wielding a commemorative Arizona Diamondbacks autographed World Series wooden baseball bat.
The New Hartford Police officers on scene quickly diffused the situation and removed the weapons from both parties. Both men along with the witnesses were escorted into the police station to provide details of the situation.
After speaking with all parties the victim had been followed by the suspect into the New Hartford Police Station parking lot because of an ongoing situation with a female that both men are associated with. The victim stated he sprayed the can of mace at the suspect only to have the mace blow back into his own face as a result of the wind.
Patrolman James Hyatt arrested John R. Sousa of Brimfield Street in Clinton for Menacing in the second degree (Class A Misdemeanor) and Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the third degree (Class D Felony). Sousa was arraigned in the Town of Paris Court and was sent to Oneida County Jail on $2,000 cash bail and is scheduled to reappear in Town of New Hartford Court at a later date.
