Utica Man Charged For Stealing Car and Credit Cards

A Utica man faces charges in New Hartford town court after it was determined that he stole a vehicle from the parking lot of St Lukes Hospital Saturday.  The vehicle was later recovered in Utica after the driver led Utica Police on a vehicle chase that resulted in an accident.

According to Officer J.D. Gehringer, the vehicle was reported stolen to police around 12:53 pm on Saturday after the vehicle’s owner went out in the parking lot and found his vehicle gone from the lot.  The vehicle’s registration number and description were obtained from the owner and a be on the look out was dispatched to all surrounding police agencies.  At approximately 1:20 pm the vehicle was located by Utica Police on Mohawk St in Utica and after a vehicle pursuit through East Utica the vehicle crashed and the operator was later located fleeing the scene on foot.  The driver was identified as Jovanny C. Ortiz, age 32 of Lafayette St in Utica.  Ortiz was also found to be in the possession of three credit cards belonging to the vehicle’s owner.

Using St Lukes security camera footage, police were able to identify Ortiz as the person who stole the vehicle from the hospital parking lot.  Ortiz faces charges of Grand Larceny 3rd, a class D Felony and Grand Larceny 4th a class E Felony.  Ortiz was arraigned in New Hartford Town Court on Thursday and remanded to Oneida Co Jail without bail.  Ortiz who is on parole also faces charges in Utica relating to the pursuit as well as a parole violation.
