ADDITIONAL CHARGE FILED IN TRACTOR TRAILER CRASH

New Hartford Police have filed a second charge against a Liverpool truck driver who crashed his big rig into a concrete crash barrier on the property of the Utica National Insurance Group last Friday afternoon.

The crash occurred on June 22nd at 4:00pm when a northbound tractor-trailer driven by 40 year old Larry T. Jones was unable to stop after descending a six-mile hill on Route 12. The tractor-trailer went through a red traffic light at the intersection with Genesee Street before crashing into the barrier. Jones was not injured and no other vehicles were damaged in the crash. Property damage to the Utica National property included damaged landscaping and minor damages to the barrier. The truck sustained heavy damage and had to be towed from the scene. At the time, Jones was issued a summons for having inadequate brakes after police discovered that the trailer service brakes had been disconnected.

After conducting follow up investigations into the cause of the accident, it has been determined that Jones passed a total of 24 signs between Paris Hill and Genesee Street warning him of the hill and that a controlled stop was available to safely stop trucks having braking problems. Jones chose not to conduct an inspection of the truck prior to descending the hill and chose not to steer his truck into the controlled stop. As a result, a charge of failing to obey traffic control devices has been filed against him. Jones is scheduled to answer both charges in New Hartford Court on July 17th.
