17 MONTH OLD ACCIDENTALLY LOCKED IN VEHICLE

     Patrolman J. M. Spinella states that on Tuesday morning a 17 month old was accidentally locked in a vehicle in the parking lot of Wal-Mart on Commercial Drive in the Town of New Hartford.

    The mother of the 17 month old, Irena Klingbeil accidentally locked her keys in the car with the child in his car seat.  Several bystanders and Wal-Mart employees assisted in attempting to open the vehicle to get the baby out.  The child was in the car for approximately 15 minutes. 

    Patrolman Spinella was on routine patrol when a Wal-Mart employee who had also just called 911 flagged him down.  Due to the hot weather conditions and the apparent condition of the child, Sgt. Colburn arrived of the New Hartford Police Department used his baton to break the passengers side window to gain entry into the vehicle.  The child was placed in an air-conditioned patrol car and was evaluated by New York Mills Fire Department.  The mother stated that she would take the child to the hospital on her own.

    The incident was determined to be an accident and no charges are going to be filed against the mother.
