3 INJURED IN NEW HARTFORD CRASH

On August 2nd, 2009 at 8:10 AM the New Hartford Police investigated a 2-car motor vehicle accident at the corner of Higby Road and Sitrin Lane.  According to Patrolman Matthew Sica, Elizabeth A. Metzger, 85 of Clinton was attempting to make a left turn off of Sitrin Lane onto Higby Road but failed to yield to a vehicle driven by Louis J. Astafan, 54 of Mohawk which was traveling north on Higby Road.  Astafan was unable to avoid Metzger’s vehicle and struck the front left tire and door. 

Elizabeth Metzger was extricated from the vehicle by the New Hartford Fire Department using the Jaws of Life and she and her passenger Donald Metzger, 88 were transported to St Lukes Hospital for minor injuries.  The passenger in Astafan’s vehicle, Diane M. Atafan, 55 was also transported to St Lukes Hospital with minor injuries. 

Both vehicle’s sustained extensive damage and had to be towed from the scene.  Higby Road was closed down for about 40 minutes until the scene was cleared.  Elizabeth Metzger was issued a summons for failing to yield the right of way when making a left turn and is due in the Town of New Hartford Court at a later date.
