WOMAN JAILED ON MULTIPLE CHARGES

POLICE DISARM SUSPECT

New Hartford Police were called to Sangertown Square Mall Sunday evening to investigate a report that a woman was damaging a car in the parking lot.

Responding police officers found that the suspect in the damage was still on the scene. When officers advised her that she was under arrest and approached her to take her into custody, she reached into her purse and pulled out a knife. Officers repeatedly ordered her to drop the knife. The woman held the knife until police were able to physically remove the knife from her possession. After being disarmed the woman continued to fight with officers in an attempt to prevent them from arresting her. Officers were able to take her into custody without injury. The police investigation revealed that the woman had consumed a narcotic drug prior to her arrest.

Arrested was Michelle M. Gentile, age 43 of Kossuth Ave, Utica.

The following charges were lodged against gentile:

  • Criminal Mischief in the second degree, a felony
  • Criminal possession of a weapon, a misdemeanor
  • Resisting arrest, a misdemeanor
  • Unlawful possession of marijuana, a violation
  • Appearing in public under the influence of a narcotic drug, a violation

Gentile was arraigned in New Hartford Town Court before Town Justice James VanSlyke who committed her to Oneida County jail in lieu of  $1,250 cash bail. Gentile is scheduled to reappear in Town Court on August 18th for additional court proceedings.

The car that Gentile damaged, a 2006 Subaru, sustained damages exceeding $2,300. The owner of the car, a mall employee, had no connection to Gentile.

New Hartford police continue to investigate this matter and additional charges may be filed in the future.
