UTICA MAN FACES FELONY CHARGES

On August 21, 2007 The New Hartford Police arrested Joseph J. Pike 40, of Utica for passing a fraudulent check.  According to Patrolman Matthew Sica on August 15th, 2007 a representative from NBT Bank on Seneca Turnpike reported that they received a fraudulent check from Joseph Pike exceeding $4,000.00.  An investigation into the matter found that the account information on the check was correct for Associated Industries Insurance Company Inc. out of Boca Raton, Florida.  According to a representative of the Insurance Company someone has been reproducing their checks and mailing them out as a lottery scam throughout the country.

Further investigation found that although Mr. Pike had no part in making the fraudulent  check he was aware that the check was fraudulent prior to depositing it into his bank account.  A few days later Mr. Pike did then withdraw the money from the account.

Pike was charged with Criminal Possession of a Forged Instrument in the Second Degree and Grand larceny in the Third Degree both Class D Felonies.  Pike was arraigned in the Town of New Hartford Court and released.  He is to appear in court at a later date.
