DMV Website not affiliated with any Government Entity

New Hartford Police are warning residents to be aware of a website that may be an attempt to scam unsuspecting parties who are led to believe they are renewing their DMV information.

The site, DMVAuthority.org claims that New York State residents can renew their registrations on line by using the site.  According to New Hartford Police Chief Raymond Philo, the site is not affiliated with either New York State DMV or the Oneida County Clerk’s Office.

“Any Web site that requests extensive personal information, as this one does, just to get to a basic level of service, should be a warning flag to consumers,” Philo said. “The Internet can be a superior site for information, but also a significant source of scams. Citizens need to be aware and recognize the difference.”

The official New York State D.M.V. website address is www.nysdmv.com. It will always contain the official New York State seal and references both Governor David A. Paterson and DMV Commissioner David J. Swarts.

Local officials state that DMVAuthority.org is currently under investigation by the DMV and the State Attorney General’s office. If anyone has used the site, they should contact the Attorney General’s Office.
