"School's Open - Drive Carefully"

Chief Raymond Philo, New Hartford Police, and top state and local officials have joined to urge vigorous public support of AAA’s annual “School’s Open – Drive Carefully” campaign to help preserve the safety of children traveling to and from school.

AAA’s yearly “School’s Open – Drive Carefully” campaign alerts motorists to the special risks to school-age children from motor vehicle crashes, the leading cause of death for children from five to fourteen years old.

To encourage drivers to exercise caution, Edward Welsh, General manager of AAA New York said that “AAA has sent colorful posters bearing the “School’s Open” legend to all local police departments and will display them at many busy intersections and school crossings during the month of September”.

Motorists will receive an additional reminder each time they see one of the “School’s Open” bumper stickers, also distributed by AAA New York for display on trucks, buses, official vehicles, school buses and passenger cars. Among prominent officials who have endorsed AAA’s “School’s Open” campaign this year are: Governor David A. Paterson; Commissioner of Motor Vehicles, David J. Swarts; Interim Commissioner of Education, Carole F. Huxley; and Superintendent of State Police Harry Corbitt. The New York State Association of Chiefs of Police also supports the campaign.

Chief Raymond Philo similarly endorsed the efforts of AAA New York and reminded motorists School’s Open – Drive Carefully.

Edward Welsh also emphasized the need to show extra caution when driving when schools reopen, since it is then that vacation-minded children are apt to be less careful. Motorists should be particularly alert for children darting out between parked cars on busy streets.

AAA New York, founded in 1901, is a fully taxpaying, not-for-profit motor club corporation. About 76,000 AAA members live in upstate New York Regions and are part of over 1.5 million members in the club’s total territory, all within New York State. AAA New York is one of five clubs in New York State and is a member of the AAA/CAA national organization, a federation of 60 clubs which serves over 50 million members in the United States and Canada.
