Three Car Crash Shuts Down Commercial Drive

The New Hartford Police Department investigated a report of suspicious activity at the Wal*Mart store located inside Consumer Square on September 3rd 2009. The incident was reported after a suspicious white female wearing a hooded sweatshirt and a baseball cap entered the store and attempted to purchase two cartons of Newport cigarettes with three different credit cards.  After the first two credit cards were declined the white female used a third card to complete the transaction.  Shortly after, the female left the store and a Wal*Mart employee followed the female into the parking lot where she was observed entering a vehicle.

The Wal*Mart employee was then able to obtain the license plate number of the vehicle as it was exiting the parking lot. After the vehicle left the area the Wal*Mart employee contacted the New Hartford Police Department to report the incident.  While investigating the complaint it was found that the credit card used to complete the cigarette purchase was stolen earlier that day from a vehicle in the outer district of Rome.  After a joint investigation between the New Hartford Police Department, the City of Rome Police Department and the Oneida County Sheriffs Office the suspicious female was identified as Scarlet Gies 29, from Rome.  On September 17th Gies was taken into by the New Hartford Police Department and charged with criminal possession of stolen property in the fourth degree, a class e felony; forgery in the second degree, a class d felony; and petit larceny, a class a misdemeanor.  Gies was arraigned in the Town of New Hartford Court where she was later released and is scheduled to return on October 1st 2009 at 1:00pm to answer the charges.
