New Hartford Resident ordered to undergo a Mental Health Exam

Calvin LaClair, age 50, of New Hartford, who was arrested last month after making a bomb threat at a local Post Office, has been ordered to undergo a mental health exam according to New Hartford Police Chief Raymond Philo. He appeared in New Hartford Town Court before Judge James VanSlyke who ordered the examination.

LaClair is accused of walking up to a mailbox outside of the Oneida Street Post Office at about 3:30pm on August 24th, before walking away telling some maintenance workers that there was a bomb and it was about to explode. As employees were being evacuated, LaClair waited across the street and watched.

LaClair was taken into custody by New Hartford Police Officers and upon searching him, a loaded .22 caliber pistol was found under his shirt. He was subsequently charged with First Degree Falsely Reporting an Incident, a class D felony, and Second Degree Criminal Possession of a Weapon, a class C felony, Philo said. New Hartford Police officials and personnel from the U.S. Postal Inspection Service used a sophisticated x-ray device to determine if there was a bomb in the mailbox. Police found no bomb and the Post Office reopened in about 45 minutes.
