Gasoline Spill in the New Hartford Shopping Center 

     On Wednesday, October 24, 2007, at about 5:00 pm the New Hartford Police Department along with the New Hartford Fire Department, the Village of New Hartford DPW, New Hartford Shopping Center Management and the New York State Dept. of Environmental Conservation Emergency Spill Response Unit responded to the New Hartford Shopping Center for a report of gasoline fumes emanating from a storm basin located at the rear of the center.

    According to Patrolman J. M. Spinella of the New Hartford Police Department, fumes originated in the front parking lot of the Shopping Center and traveled through the underground storm basin system. The incident occurred when an unidentified vehicle was parked in the front of the Shopping Center developed a gasoline leak allowing the gasoline to enter the drain system through a parking lot basin.  The gasoline that leaked out of the vehicle then flowed through the storm water drain system. DPW crews quickly deployed absorbant materials where the storm water system drains into a stream. The absorbant material collected the residual gasoline before it could reach the nearby fishing waters of the Sauquoit Creek and eliminating any environmental damage. Fire Department personnel used a fire department pumper to flush the drain system eliminating any fumes.
