Serial Thief Apprehended After Stealing Donation Money
On October 27, 2009, the New Hartford Police Department arrested Kelly A. Gaw, age 35, of Clinton, relative to several theft related complaints.
The New Hartford Police first became aware of Gaw’s activities earlier in the month after responding to a shoplifting complaint at the Hannaford Supermarket located on Commercial Drive. At that time, Gaw was found to be in possession of a New York State driver’s license and a social security card that were in someone else’s name. That investigation led to Gaw being charged related to unlawfully possessing those documents and the shoplifting incident, after which she was released with an appearance ticket. Further investigation revealed that Gaw had actually stolen a purse belonging to the person to whom the driver’s license and social security card belonged, while at the Hannaford Supermarket located on Kellogg Road. The purse also contained credit cards, which Gaw then used or attempted to use at several retail locations throughout the Town of Kirkland, forging the signature of the card holder.
Most recently, The New Hartford Police Department received multiple complaints from area retailers regarding the theft of donation canisters from the register areas of the stores. A subsequent investigation into those complaints revealed that Gaw was also responsible for those thefts. A total of four donation canister were taken, each containing a quantity of money.
Today, October 27, 2009, Gaw appeared in Town of New Hartford Court in response to the appearance ticket that was previously issued to her. She has been charged with the following crimes:
-Six counts of Petit Larceny, a class A misdemeanor, -Two counts of Attempted Petit Larceny, a class B misdemeanor, -One count of Criminal Possession of Stolen Property in the Fifth Degree, a class A misdemeanor, -One count of Grand Larceny in the Fourth Degree, a class E felony, -Four counts of Forgery in the Second Degree, a class D felony, -Four counts of Identity Theft in the Third Degree, a class D felony
Gaw was arraigned in Town of New Hartford Court and remanded to the Oneida County Correctional Facility in lieu of $23,000 cash bail. A felony exam has been scheduled for October 30, 2009.
