Hit & Run Crash Leads to Multiple Charges
On October 28th, 2009 at 1:49a.m., the New Hartford Police were called to the corner of Oneida Street and Kellogg Road for a 2-car accident. While en-route to the scene, police were advised that a male operator of one of the vehicles had just fled the scene on foot.
Responding Officers checked the area and located Colin S. Cha, 17, of Utica a short distance away. Cha was later identified as the operator of a vehicle that was traveling south on Oneida Street when it passed through a red light and struck a vehicle driven by Sergey A. Zaishnikov, 22, also of Utica. Cha did not own the vehicle he was operating and Police were unable to make contact with the owner of the vehicle at the time of the collision. Cha was arrested for Driving While Intoxicated and additionally charged with operating without a license, passing a red light and leaving the scene of a property damage accident. Cha was arraigned in the Town Of New Hartford Court and sent to the Oneida County Jail on bail, he is to return to court at a later date.
Further investigation into the matter found that the vehicle Cha was operating at the time of the accident was stolen from a Seward Avenue, Utica residence over night. Cha now faces an additional charge of Criminal Possession of Stolen Property 4th degree, a Class A Felony.
