SHOPLIFTING INCIDENT RESULTS IN MULTIPLE CHARGES

A 47-year-old Utica man was jailed Saturday evening after he was stopped for shoplifting at Sears at Sangertown Square.

New Hartford Police were called to Sears at 5:50 p.m. Saturday after store Loss Prevention Officers observed a man shoplift two portable DVD systems valued at $309. The Loss Prevention officers recognized the man as the same person who stole two more portable DVD systems from the store on December 16th. Those two DVD systems were valued at $379. The man identified himself to police and store Loss Prevention Officers as John A. Genovese.

Genovese was taken into police custody and charged with two misdemeanor counts of petit larceny. He was taken to the New Hartford Police station where he was processed relative to those charges. While being processed, the police investigation reveled that Genovese had provided police with a false name. Police were able to determine his real name was Jon A. Giannolla. This resulted in additional charges of Forgery, a felony, and False Personation, a misdemeanor, being filed against Giannolla. The forgery charge is the result of Giannolla signing arrest documents using the false name.

Giannolla was arraigned in New Hartford court on all charges before Town Justice James VanSlyke.  Giannolla was committed to Oneida County Jail in lieu of $1,000 bond.

Further court action in this matter is scheduled for December 30th.
